Spindles are the business end of the router. They provide the rotational torque that does the work of cutting.

Major brands
Colombo, HSD, Kress, and Porter-Cable. We use primarily Colombo and HSD spindles. Kress and Porter-Cable spindles are basically just souped-up Dremels.

Replacement
Important factors for replacing a spindle are: HP, Voltage, Amperage, and RPMs found on the nameplate (see fig 2). As there may be multiple specs on a nameplate, a PICTURE is usually the best way to determine the right motor.
When a servo travels in such a manner so that it contacts the switch, the switch opens and current to the servo is cut off, stopping the servo.
While the servo family is further divided into AC and DC types, most all the servos we use are brushed DC.

On the servo's shaft are magnets, attached at specific locations. Sequences and combinations of magnetic fields generated within the motor drive the magnets and give precise control over the shaft's rotation. Also on the servo’s shaft is a glass disc with very fine lines on it. The optical encoder counts those lines as it rotates with the motor, the information is fed back to the controller, and through a host of feedback loops and logic circuits, produces the desired motion.

Mfrost: /* Inverter Basics */

Inverters
:An inverter is an electrical device that converts direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). It may be single phase or 3 phase, and powers the machine’s systems and motors. It is so named because early mechanical AC to DC converters were modified and made to work in reverse, and thus were "inverted", to convert DC to AC.

Inverter Basics
Inverters usually need to be programmed with values obtained from the name plate on the spindle (get pic) of the machine into which the inverter is to be installed.

Shown here are 2 inverters, an Altivar 31 (note that it says "Altivar 31" below the blue Telemechanique Logo).
The second inverter is a Teco FM100, which we no longer use though you may still encounter these.
Important considerations in replacing inverters are:
* Phase (single phase or 3 phase?)
* ATC (does machine have an automatic tool changer?)
* Horsepower
* Voltage
* Amperage

To test spindle, short the screws marked " +24V " and " LI1 " , the small red and black wires above

To change the direction of spindle rotation, swap any 2 of the large Red, Black, or White wires at lower left EXCLUDING GREEN, i.e. swap red & black, or, red and white, or black & white

In some setups, the Inverter may be located somewhere other than on the machine, such as on a wall, as in this case:

* Horsepower
* Voltage
* Amperage

In some setups, the Inverter may be located somewhere other than on the machine, like a wall, as in this case:
* Serial-to-RJ45 cable
* PowerSuite application
* Power leads

Quick Method
# Connect serial-to-RJ45 cable
####brA = Yes
### Frequency range
#### TFR (first)
#### HSP = 300 - This is the maximum frequency.
#### LSP = 100
#### ITH = set this to the current on the nameplate
### Thermal Protection - use Amperage value from spindle plaque
### Optimization
#### Set voltage boost = 0

A servo motor is usually comprised of the drive section and the encoder. A servo motor is much smoother in motion than a comparable stepper motor, and will have a much higher resolution for position control.
